Annual Geometry Field Trips to
Home Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright

Nerinx Geometry students explored The Frank Lloyd Wright House at Ebsworth Park. The field trip included a movie about the history of the building and restoration of the house along with a docent-led tour. The polygons that we studied in Geometry - parallelograms, triangles, hexagons, rhombi and trapezoids - are evident in the architecture, the furniture and the stained glass in this house. There are only two structural right angles in the house because the floor plan is two intersecting parallelograms and all the angles in the house are 120 degrees and 60 degrees. The objective of this trip was to see what we were studying come to life. This is the sixth year that Mrs. Simcox has taken all of her Geometry classes to see this house. The cost of the field trip was paid for by a Target Field Trip Grant. Thank you, Target!

Nerinx Math Students in Missouri Math League

Nerinx girls in some of the calculus and precalculus honors classes annually participate in the Missouri Math League Contest. It is a series of six tests given at different times throughout the year, culminating with final placements announced in the spring. In April 2008 Nerinx placed 8th in the entire state for the 2007-2008 school year. This marked the first time Nerinx finished in the top ten, although there have been several times that it made the top twenty. Congratulations to the girls and to their teachers: Mrs. Henerey and Mr. Magee.

Annual Math Celebration For 3/14

On March 14 the Math Department celebrates Pi Day. The teachers wear PI shirts. Math students bring in decorated pies, posters, hats, and poems - all embellished with the PI symbol - in their efforts to receive extra credit points.

Recognition is made of the best pastries. All culinary efforts are sold, with the proceeds going to the student scholarship fund.
