Scholarships Awarded for Essays

Congratulations to Juniors Anna Chott, Katie Hetlage and Elizabeth Modde who received scholarships from the Archdiocese of St. Louis Office of Stewardship and Development for their essays on the importance of stewardship. Each year, juniors throughout the Archdiocese are invited to write about what giving means to them. After being judged at the local high school, the winning essays are forwarded to the Archdiocese. Good job, ladies!

National Merit Finalists

Congratulations to Nerinx Hall's National Merit Finalists: Mary Craven, Suzanne Hart, Meredith Starrs, and Emily Wich. They reached this standing by meeting specified requirements, which include having a record of consistently very high academic performance in all of grand 9 through 12, earning a score on the SAT consistent with their performance on the 2008 PSAT, and receiving full endorsement from their high school. Last fall they were recognized as semifinalists. More than 1.5 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. Congratulations to these four Nerinx seniors on this great academic accomplishment.

Award For Her Poetry

Congratulations to Nerinx senior, Chris Soucy, who was selected as the winner of the 2010 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance Celebration Poetry Contest at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Chris received the award for her poem, "The Summons," at a luncheon on February 9.

The Junior team placed 7th and the Senior team placed 8th. In the Individual Awards, Freshman Lilly Webster placed 6th and Freshman Becca Schamel placed 9th.

Artwork for 100 Neediest Cases

Eight Nerinx students placed in the top 40 of the art competition that is part of the annual 100 Neediest Cases project of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Their drawings will be featured in the Post in November or December to illustrate one of the families in need of help over the holidays. Congratulations to Erin Hoffmann who placed 4th in the competition, MacKenzie King who placed 7th, and to Rachel Ghazarian, Megan Sheehan, Courtney Sheets, Caitlen Winschel, Kelsey Seals, and Sarah Duval who all placed in the top 40. These students and all the top 40 winners will be recognized at a reception on December 5 at the History Museum, where their drawings will be on display during the month of December.

Advanced Placement Awards

Three of Nerinx Hall students were awarded AP Scholar Awards for their performance during testing in the Spring of 2009. About 18 percent of the nearly 1.7 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to earn an AP Scholar Award. Congratulations to two members of the class of 2009: Alice Floros, who received recognition as a Scholar with Honor for earning an average of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Nicole Kraska '09, as well as current senior Maura Tobin qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more exams with a grade of 3 or higher on a five-point scale.

District Choir

Three of Nerinx Hall's Select Chorus members were chosen by audition to perform with the Metro 8 All District Choir in November. This special honor choir was made up of top singers from St. Louis schools. Congratulations to junior Samantha Auch, sophomore Tracy Johnson, and senior Emily Wich.
